A 55-year-old worker was rescued in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, after a trench collapsed and buried him up to his neck. First responders were called to Rhine Street, where three people had reportedly been working in the ditch. Two managed to escape before the collapse, while the third became trapped by the failed ground.
The worker was taken to hospital, although his condition was not released. No further details on injuries were provided. What is clear is that the speed of the rescue was critical.
Nearby workers from Wisconsin Utility Exposure helped by using a hydro excavation truck as a large vacuum to remove soil from around the trapped man. In a trench collapse, every minute matters. Soil can press against the chest and body, making breathing increasingly difficult even when the worker’s head remains above ground.
According to local officials, plywood had been used to shore the trench, but it did not hold. The incident is a reminder that trench support must be designed for the actual ground conditions, excavation depth, surcharge loads, groundwater and site activity.
A trench may look stable moments before failure. Once soil starts to move, collapse can happen suddenly and with enough force to trap or crush a worker. Even relatively shallow failures can be fatal because soil is heavy, confined and difficult to remove quickly by hand.
