World Tunnel Congress 2023 (WTC2023) Athens Candidacy

The Greek Tunneling Society (GTS) is applying for the organization of the 49th ITA-AITES General Assembly and the 2023 World Tunnel Congress in Athens, Greece, from the 12th to the 18th May 2023.

Athens, a cosmopolitan metropolis, located at the crossroads of three continents, provides easy access from all over the world and combines state-of-the-art infrastructures, excellent congress facilities and modern amenities.

The proposed venue of the Congress, Megaron Athens International Conference Centre, is one of the finest and most technologically advanced conference venues in Europe, with exceptional aesthetics, situated in the city centre and on a direct Metro line to the International Airport.

The Athens Metro transportation can be a unique cultural walkthrough, since during the construction the Hellenic Ministry of Culture decided to display the emerged ancient treasures revealed from the excavations in open view at public spaces. A unique approach instead of the usual practice of moving them to museums or storerooms.

Over the past years, Greece has experienced a boom in underground construction resulting in the development of notable tunneling and underground projects. This stretches from new metro line extensions to both major motorway tunnels and long railway tunnels. Moreover, many other underground projects could be highlighted including mining works, Underground Hazardous Waste Repository etc.
