CPT cones are available in multiple sizes, with the 10cm2 being the industry standard. Larger and smaller CPT cone sizes are also available tailored to the needs of any testing situation. Read on for more information!
Most commonly used CPT cone sizes range between 5cm2 and 15cm2 in cross-sectional area and are essentially scale models of the 10cm2 model with the same proportions as specified by the ASTM Standard for CPT testing. CPT cones within the above range usually do not require any size-corrections. Cones of smaller cross-sectional area in the order of 1cm2 are available and used in specialized lab or research applications, but tend to produce higher cone resistances than standard-size cones, so size-corrections may be necessary.
Additionally, measuring the used CPT cones on a daily basis and ensuring they are within ASTM standard tolerances is essential to the accuracy of the obtained test data, since normal wear and tear may blunt the cone and affect the data accuracy.
