A large sinkhole appeared on a road in the city of Chengdu, China, on the morning of Friday, June 21, due to an under-construction subway site collapse.
The Chengdu Rail Transit Group released a relevant statement, according to which the event took place around 3:50 a.m. outside the city subway’s Line 13 Xiaonan Street Station.
They also identified the cause of the collapse as two burst water pipes, which were buried at a depth of two meters and had diameters of 1 and 0.3 meters respectively.
Shortly after the event, at about 4:00 a.m. nearby residents were asked to evacuate the area, and traffic restrictions were put in place.
Later on the same morning, at around 9:00 a.m., repair personnel started repairs of the site using heavy machinery,
It is noteworthy that, thankfully, no injuries were caused by the appearance of the 12-meter-wide sinkhole.
Finally, Line 13 developers had commented in May 2024, that construction of twenty out of twenty one stations had been completed, with only Xiaonan Street Station remaining, while the project was expected to enter service in 2025.
