Sinkhole on Naples road swallows two cars

A large sinkhole appeared on a road in Naples, Italy, on the morning of Wednesday, February 21, swallowing two cars.

Furthermore, the incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. in the city’s Vamero district, while the sinkhole also caused a lamppost and a tree to collapse.

One of the two cars that fell in the sinkhole was parked, while the other one was in transit.

A nearby Italian army patrol rescued two people from the swallowed car, and the operation was caught on video.

The sinkhole was attributed to an underground collapsed sewer, according to the Naples city council, which also stated that local police, firemen and workers from the city’s water company were on the scene.

It was also made known by the city council that the water supply had been interrupted in the area, well as how the nearby Salesiani high school and another nearby building were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that such events are not uncommon in Naples. Last month, another similar incident took place in the city, while in 2021 a sinkhole measuring 50 meters in diameter swallowed three cars and caused power outages at the Ospedale del Mare.

Naples Mayor, Gaetano Manfredi, blamed the incidents on the lack of regular maintenance of the city’s underground infrastructure in the past.
