It was announced on March 13, 2024, by the British Geotechnical Association (BGA), that the 63rd Rankine Lecture will be given by University of California, Berkeley, Professor Kenichi Soga, in March 2025, at Imperial College London.
The Rankine Lecture is one of the most prestigious lectures in geotechnics, and is named after William John Macquorn Rankine, who was a Civil Engineering professor at the University of Glasgow and was among the first engineers that made significant contributions to the field in the UK.
Professor Soga is the Donald H. McLaughlin Professor in Mineral Engineering and a Chancellor’s Professor at UC Berkeley, as well as also being the Director of the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure.
During his long lasting career, professor Soga has published more than 450 journal and conference papers, and he has also co-authored the book “Fundamentals of Soil Behavior, 3rd edition” along with Professor James K. Mitchell.
Professor Soga’s research interests mainly lie in infrastructure sensing, performance-based design and maintenance of infrastructure, energy geotechnics, and geomechanics.
It is also worth noting that prior to re-joining UC Berkeley, where he obtained his PhD in 1994, he served a long academic career at the University of Cambridge.
Geoengineer.org recently published an interview with Professor Soga, which you can read here.
Finally, the 62nd Rankine Lecture was given on March 13, 2024, by Professor Lidija Zdravković of Imperial College London, and was titled “Geotechnical Engineering for a Sustainable Society”.
