Professor Krishna Reddy gave the 19th G.A. Leonards Lecture on “Sustainability and Resiliency-Based Innovation: Research and Practices in Geoenvironmental Engineering”, which was hosted by the Purdue Geotechnical Society on May 5, 2023.
The G.A. Leonards Lecture is an annual event which was established in 2003 in honor of Professor Gerald A. Leonards. This year’s speaker is a University Scholar and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is the Director of both the Sustainable Engineering Research and Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering laboratories at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
In this year’s lecture, professor Krishna Reddy gave a very interesting lecture, in which, after defining the terms of sustainability and resiliency, he explained some of the challenges we are facing today and the impacts of climate change on the environment.
It was later stated in the lecture how it is “necessary to develop proactive, effective, sustainable and resilient engineered systems, technologies, processes, materials etc.” and that this is possible only with innovation.
The professor went on to present a lake sediment remediation and then explained how, in the United States, landfills are the third largest source of methane emissions.
New methods for landfills are presented, which include new materials that drastically speed-up the process of organic waste degradation, as well as a zero-emission cover system, which can eliminate all gases dissipating from the landfill to the atmosphere.
Later on, a case study about the process of phytoremediation was analyzed, in which plants were used for the remediation of contaminated soil.
Finally, the process of Nanoscale Iron Particles’ injection into polluted groundwater aquifers is explained, as well as polluted stormwater runoff remediation.
The full lecture, as well as all the lecture slides and event photos, are freely available on YouTube and the Purdue Geotechnical Society’s website.
