A stunning cliff collapse that occurred in the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain situated in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Morocco was caught on camera.
The ground failure happened on November 14 in Argaga beach, located in La Gomera, the 2nd largest of the Canary Island system.
A slice of the cliff suddenly gave way and collapsed into the water below. The rockmass on the site seems to be of layered sedimentary origin (possibly sandstones).
The beach was crowded at that time and the stunning failure was caught on camera (click the video below to watch).
There were parked vehicles at the base of the cliff and authorities were concerned about people being trapped under the rubble. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to search and rescue any victims but, fortunately, no one was found while no reports for people missing were issued later.
The site was later closed as officials raised concerns over subsequent failures.
Coastal cliff collapses are not uncommon. Usually, those failures are associated with erosion caused by the wave action. Gradually the stability of the rockmass deteriorates and chunks of the material give way. Sometimes the water undercuts the slopes and its upper part loses support and fails.
