Protecting Railways: £33M Investment to Prevent Landslides

Network Rail is undertaking a £33m project aimed at preventing landslides along a section of the East Coast Main Line near Durham, England. This vital work is designed to secure the 1km stretch of railway at Browney Curve, which has been built on an embankment susceptible to ground movement. The project, set for completion by early 2025, will help safeguard the busy route, used by trains traveling from London to Scotland.

The initiative includes the installation of 529 piles, each drilled up to 25 meters deep, to stabilize the ground. Improved drainage systems will also prevent soil from becoming waterlogged, a key factor in preventing landslides. Alongside these measures, Network Rail is working to widen the embankment and regrade the land, further enhancing the safety and stability of the line.

In addition to engineering improvements, Network Rail has taken environmental measures, planting new trees and wildflower meadows around the railway. The plant roots will help absorb water and reinforce the soil, providing a sustainable, long-term solution that benefits both the rail line and the local ecosystem.

This large-scale preventative project comes in response to past safety failings, including the 2020 Carmont derailment in Scotland caused by a landslide. The investment highlights Network Rail's commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring the safety of the UK’s rail network.
