A huge landslide took place next to the piers of an under-construction dam viaduct in Artvin, Turkey, on April 22 and was caught on video.
Furthermore, the area is a construction site for the Yusufeli Dam, which includes a 540 MW hydroelectric plant and a 270-meter-tall double-curvature arch dam, making it the fifth tallest in the world.
The video that emerged shows the failure of a heavily engineered slope where the viaduct’s piers are located on and next to.
It is also evident at the beginning of the video, that a previous failure seems to have occurred at the slope’s lower part, which would have reduced the slope’s overall stability.
It is most likely that, even though not hit by the landslide, the piers’ stability will have to be re-evaluated after the event.
