A landslide occurred on Sunday, September 17, in the northwestern DR of the Congo, after days of torrential rain.
Furthermore, the incident took place near the banks of the Congo River, in the town of Lisal in the Mongala province, according to the civil organization Forces Vives president, Matthieu Mole.
He also stated that the downpour caused significant damage, including a landslide that swallowed up several houses built near the foot of a mountain.
It was made known that the event has so far caused 17 casualties, but the number is expected to rise according to Mr. Mole, as the debris has not yet been fully cleared away.
Governor Cesar Limbaya Mbangisa announced a three-day mourning period, starting on Monday, and offered his condolences to the families of the victims, while pointing out that machinery is needed on the scene.
Finally, such events are not uncommon in the Congo, and the previous ones occurred in April and May.
