An enormous sinkhole has opened in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.
The collapse is about 30m. wide and 15m. depth. At first, people thought that it was caused by an earthquake. "I thought it was an earthquake. I backed the car and went against the flow. People ran around asking for help, went out of their cars leaving their vehicle," Rudianto, a local driver, said.
However, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that a construction flaw in a hospital car park provoked the failure. "The retaining wall was not able to withstand the load, especially during the rainy season," spokesperson of BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said.
The incident did not cause any casualties, however, rescue teams and Fire Department of Surabaya conducted continuous investigations about possible victims.
