La Hacienda hotel collapsed into Sicra River in the Peruvian town of Lircay, on January 26, 2017, due to foundation erosion caused by the heavy rains that hit the region.
According to the Civil Defense authorities, intense rainfall started on Wednesday afternoon (January 25) and went on for 10 hours. The foundations of the 3-story hotel, which was built on the edge of Sicra River, eroded due to the rising waters, leading to the structure' s collapse. No injuries were reported, since the hotel had been previously evacuated.
The hotel's collapse was not the only damage caused in Lircay due to the rainfall. According to the local media, several projects under construction in town were destroyed, while damage to houses, located in the neighborhoods of Pueblo Nuevo and Bellavista, was also reported, with floods in Bellavista affecting most families. Floods were also reported in other parts of the city. Thirty homes were flooded and roads were blocked by landslides.
