Ten miners were killed. Another two were rescued 10 days after the flooding on September 28, in the Zhengsheng coal mine in the North Province of Shanxi, China.
Mine accidents are common in China over the past years and efforts have been made to reduce the risk of disaster. As a result 600 small mines were closed down from state officials last year. It is not yet determined what caused the flood, but according to sourcewatch.org the main cause of such accidents is non compliance with safety measures and inadequate systems for ventilation and fire protection.
