On August 10, 2025, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir, with its epicenter in the town of Sindirgi. Shaking was felt as far as 200 kilometers away in Istanbul, a metropolitan area of more than 16 million people. The earthquake caused the collapse of 16 buildings, damaged mosque minarets, and left at least one person dead and 29 injured. The incident also revived memories of the devastating 2023 earthquake, which claimed over 53,000 lives and caused widespread destruction across southern Turkey.

Initial reports indicated that most collapsed buildings were derelict or unused, although several residential structures in Sindirgi and nearby villages sustained significant damage. In Golcuk, homes and a mosque were among the affected structures. The failure of slender architectural elements, such as minarets, highlighted vulnerabilities under strong lateral forces. Aftershocks, including one measured at 4.6, followed the main event and increased the risk of secondary failures. Emergency teams worked to rescue trapped occupants, with some survivors located after prolonged debris removal efforts.
Balikesir lies along active fault lines, where seismic events occur frequently due to tectonic movement. Ground shaking intensity and the observed damage indicate the need for assessment of local soil profiles, building foundations, and structural retrofitting. The region’s seismic characteristics involve hazard mapping, soil-structure interaction studies, and application of modern construction codes. The Balikesir earthquake provided data comparable to that from 2023, where structural performance influenced the extent of losses.
