Blasting completed on Stockholm Metro Service Tunnel linking Hagastaden and Arenastaden

Blasting works have been completed on a new service tunnel forming part of the Stockholm Metro Expansion programme, marking a key underground construction milestone beneath the Swedish capital. The final four metres of drill-and-blast excavation were achieved last week, completing the underground connection between Hagastaden and Arenastaden.

The newly completed service tunnel is a critical enabling structure for the next phases of construction within the expanding metro network. Project representatives described the breakthrough as a milestone of major technical and logistical significance, achieved within a dense urban environment and under stringent safety and sustainability requirements.

The tunnel will support subsequent excavation, installation, and operational activities associated with the wider Stockholm Metro Expansion, which represents the largest investment in the city’s public transport system in more than 50 years. When complete, the programme will add approximately 30 kilometres of new track and 18 stations, significantly increasing capacity and improving connectivity across the metropolitan area.

Planned works include new Blue Line extensions from Akalla to Barkarby and from Kungsträdgården to Nacka and Söderort, alongside a new Green Line connection between Odenplan and Arenastaden. In parallel, construction of the entirely new Yellow Line, linking Fridhemsplan and Älvsjö, is progressing, with procurement for the main tunnelling contract expected to be launched this year.
