The last explosion at the quarry was performed last Monday, removing 36.000 tons of limestone. The quarry is planned to gather storm water and sewage, to protect the area from floods. The construction of the Thornton reservoir is part of phase II of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project.
The water from the reservoir would be sent to the Calumet Water Treatment Plant in Chicago through tunnel, which is under construction, and then it would be released to streams and waterways.Concrete pipes have been constructed (500 foot depth) in the perimeter of the quarry, in order to avoid groundwater from entering the reservoir and prevent storm water from escaping. According to TARP, completion of the Thornton Reservoir is scheduled by 2015 and will provide $40 million per year in benefits to 556,000 people in 15 communities.
