Flash floods in Sweden and Denmark have mainly caused traffic problems, trapping cars and regional buses under water and threatening drivers' lives. Electricity was cut in Swedish residential areas, while police and emergency services remained alert throughout the weekend, as some additional rain was forecasted.
20mm of rain in less than an hour on Sunday morning, led to flooding of main highways and roads in the area of Skåne, in southern Sweden. Highways 585 and E6 were partially blocked as a result of the excessive rain, emergency crews evacuated buses filled up to the windows with water and in many cases drivers had to swim out of their cars. Police received over 500 calls from inundated homes where electricity was cut. A class 1 warning was finally issued in the Skåne region, predicting that it may receive 50 extra millimeters of rain on Sunday.
Flooding issues were also reported in Denmark, where an extreme rain warning was issued by the authorities on Saturday night. In the Copenhagen area rescue workers saved a driver trapped in his flooded car at the last moment.
