West part of Iran was hit by a strong Mw 6,4 earthquake on Sunday, November 25, 2018.
About 700 people were injured in the province of Kermanshah but only 33 of them spent the night at hospitals. Fortunately, officials reported that no person died.
According to Iran's institute of geophysics, the temblor struck at a depth of 7 km and the epicenter was located 17 km southwest of the Sarpol-e Zahab city. The victims were mostly injured as they panicked to rush out of their residences. Few buildings were damaged while most constructions suffered from cracks.
The buildings in the affected area were recently built after a major Mw 7,3 quake struck killing 620, injuring about 12,000 people and damaging around 30,000 houses.
Iran is between 2 tectonic plates, the Arabian and the Eurasian, and thus tectonic activity is very common. The country was hit numerous times by strong earthquakes that have destroyed buildings and killed thousands of people.
Back in 1990, a massive Mw 7.4 earthquake occurred in north Iran. 40,000 people were killed, 300,000 were injured and about 500,000 lost their homes after numerous cities and villages turned into debris.
