The UK plans to establish a new reservoir that will be utilized for water storage, for the first time in decades.
The reservoir will be developed near Havant Thicket, located in Hampshire, a county in southern England. The purpose of the endeavor is twofold: It will provide drinkable water for southeast England and it will protect streams that flow through chalk hills in the area. “We’re in a privileged position to be progressing the first water storage reservoir to be built in the UK for decades as the region’s water supplies are put under pressure by climate change, housing growth and the need to protect our natural environment," Bob Taylor, chief executive of Portsmouth Water, stated.
The reservoir will be the first to be constructed in the UK since the 1980s when the last similar facility was built. The 1,6 km2 area that is owned by Portsmouth Water, is currently covered by vegetation. Officials state that the development of the reservoir will create a new natural habitat for the fauna.
Portsmouth Water will develop additional facilities associated with the reservoir's function and the project will be fully operational by 2029. The ground in the area consists of clayey soil, therefore, shaping the reservoir will be facilitated. A pipeline that will transfer water from springs to the reservoir and from the reservoir to the water supply network, when it is needed, will also be installed. The tube will be 70-160 centimeters in diameter and will be installed about 1 meter below the ground.
During the following time period, engineers and designers will cooperate to accomplish the following tasks:
The total cost of the project is expected to reach around $130 million. On March 25, 2020, Portsmouth Water will conduct a Supply Chain Engagement Event during which all suppliers will be provided with information about the main reservoir construction and the additional works. “We want to ensure our approach maximizes market interest and value, as well as ensuring we can benefit from innovation and community involvement," Taylor added.
Walking, cycling facilities and picnic areas will also be established near the reservoir providing recreational activities for the local community.
