Mudslide in Mexico: 7 fatalities

A mudslide that hit a village in Mexico, has caused 7 fatalities. The incident occurred on July 10, 2019.

The slide was caused after heavy rainfall struck the region οf Santo Tomas Chautla village, located near the city of Puebla. Debris fell on a residence and its roof totally collapsed killing 3 adults and 4 children and injuring 2 more children. The victims were celebrating a graduation at the time of the unfortunate incident. 

Fire fighters, the Red Cross and the army rushed at the scene to conduct rescue operations.

“Based on preliminary reports, seven bodies without vital signs have been recovered corresponding to three adults and four children; additionally, medical units have transferred two rescued minors to Hospital del Sur,” the state government of Puebla City said.

Local authorities reported that at least 11 more people were injured due to the ground failure and the number of casualties may increase as times passes.

According to officials, people living in landslide prone areas were evacuated to avoid a similar disaster. “Our aim would be to prevent another tragedy so that no one else dies," secretary general of Puebla's state government, Fernando Manjilla, stated.
