TBM Evelyn has set a new project record at National Grid's London Power Tunnels project, digging 55.2 meters in a single 12-hour shift! The tunnel is part of a £250m project, aiming in providing new underground infrastructure for electricity transmission.
London Power Tunnels is a seven year project, undertaken by National Grid, involving the construction of an extensive network of underground electricity transmission tunnels and help London meet the increasing energy demands. Overall, the project includes the construction of 32km of tunnels with 4.0 and 3.0 meters internal diameter. Fourteen shafts and four connecting tunnels with underground chambers will also be constructed by Costain Skanska, main contractor of the project.
Evelyn, the TMB used in the tunnel excavation since November 2011, has so far excavated 17,422 linear meters of London clay, removing nearly 17,1581 cubic meters of material. A few days ago, Evelyn has set a new record, digging 55.2meters in only 12 hours, adding another project best in the following list:
Tunnel agent working on the project, Angus Mackenzie, commented on Evelyn's performance: "Evelyn's performance and reliability has been excellent, with availability continuously in the high 90 percentiles."
