A live video captured the moment of sliding, as the large volume of land moved downslope and blocked the road near the city of Patras, in Achaia province.
The mudslide developed gradually, from January 19 till the next day, when the main sliding occurred. The provincial road that connects the province capital with the village of Moira was entirely cut off, blocking the access of several local communities to the city of Patras. Local people are now obliged to follow a detour of 50 km to reach the capital. What is more, a water pipeline serving for water transfer to a nearby hydroelectric power plant was damaged due to the event; the power plant was forced to cease operations.
According to the geologists that conducted the field survey, the landslide has a width of 200 m at the road level and 400 m at the stem. At the moment, and due to the bad weather conditions that prevail at the region, any interventions to repair the damage were deemed inappropriate.
