A lot of Michigan’s dams are very old and over the lifespan for a dam (50 years), raising worries about their function and the potential hazard of failure. A typical example is the Hamilton Dam that seems ready to collapse with some missing parts of concrete and problems in the floodgates.
The Otsego and Trowbridge dams, on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County and the Boardman Dam, owned by Grand Traverse County on the Boardman River, are also in poor condition and very dangerous. Attempts have been made to repair or remove ageing dams using government funding but more funding is necessary to continue the efforts, according to Chris Freiburger, a dam specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
