One of Geoengineer.org's geotechnical engineers visited the island of Cephalonia,Greece, only two days after the second earthquake event (M=5.8), which caused extended damage mainly in the Lixouri peninsula. The first earthquake (M=5.9) that hit the island on Jan. 26th 2014 triggered landslides and damage infrastrusture, as posted a few days ago. Read on to see the main observations found so far.
The ports of the major towns of the island have sustained damages. At the port of Argostoli sand boils and relatively narrow surface cracks, are observed due to liquefaction and liquefaction induced lateral spread. Horizontal displacements increased from the landside to the waterfront of the port reaching half a meter in total in some locations. Also, at the port of Lixouri extensive cracks due to liquefaction induced lateral spread are observed affecting its operational capacity.
Access to Lixouri was possible only through the ferry boat from Argostoli, because portions of the regional road that connects the two towns were closed and there was high risk of rockfalls. Evidence of liquefaction was found along the coastline of Lixouri, in the form of liquefaction sand boils. In other parts of the town, the liquefied material has been ejected through the soil cracks and was exposed on the soil surface. Damages to buildings are evident, nevertheless in the town no collapses are reported.
Geoengineer.org is in close collaboration with GEER association heading to the island.
