GEER (Geotechnical Extreme Event Reconnaissance) Association in collaboration with EERI (Earthquake Engineering Research Institute) responded immediately to the continuous earthquake activity taking place in Cephalonia island, Greece, by sending a special team on the spot.
This joint effort, coordinated by Sissy Nikolaou (M. EERI, 2004), is further supported by representatives from the major geotechnical engineering schools of Greece (National Technical University of Athens, University of Patras, Thessaloniki and Thessaly) as well as local EERI members. Practitioners and private firms have also volunteered to assist the GREEK-US teams in the field investigations.
The team is going to investigate and document the effects of the earthquake sequence on the subsurface and infrastructure of the region, relating it to local soil and geologic conditions. Special focus will be given to the performance of the port facilities of Lixouri and Argostoli, while observations of liquefaction, lateral spreading, soil-foundation interaction, topographic effects of the ground motions, slope stability are also part of the agenda. Moreover, Greek structural engineers are going to cooperate with expert in concrete construction and non-structural damage, also EERI and Applied Technology Council (ATC) member, in order to document the performance of structures in the area.
