At least four fatalities after heavy rain in southern Ecuador triggered floods and landslides in Azuay Province on 27 March 2022.
Floods and landslides pushed rocks and debris onto the small community of Sayausí in Cuenca Canton. The municipal government report that a school building and ten houses were completely destroyed, leaving at least 14 people homeless. Furthermore, 27 houses sustained damage and many other are at risk and are being assessed.
A massive search and rescue operation is ongoing, including teams from the Fire Service, Civil Defence, Police, Red Cross and volunteers. Several people have been rescued from the rubbles. However, authorities reported at least 4 fatalities, while 5 people were injured and 5 people experienced hypothermia.
The landslides have also caused major disruption to traffic, blocking important communication routes in the area near Cuenca-Molleturo road. Moreover, water supplies have been affected and it is estimated that 250,000 people have not access to drinking water.
The incident came almost two months after a major landslide, triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall, that killed at least 24 people and injured almost 50 others in Ecuador's capital city of Quito in early February.
