Poland's Worst Flood in Decades: Storm Boris Destroys Cities, Collapse Bridges! Mass Evacuation!
news Other Geotechnical Reconnaissance of Natural Disasters Storm Boris caused severe flooding across southern Poland, particularly affecting regions like Lądek-Zdrój and Kłodzko. Lądek-Zdrój was left without electricity, water, or mobile phone service as floodwaters surged, exceeding the record levels set in 1997. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate, while those remaining behind worked to clear mud and debris from their homes. Emergency services evacuated 1,600 people in the Kłodzko district, as heavy rain and rising rivers posed a serious threat. The town of Glucholazy saw its rivers swell beyond two meters above alarm levels, forcing further evacuations. The flood destroyed a critical water pipeline between the Topola and Kozielno reservoirs, exacerbating the crisis. Over 53 water gauges in Polish rivers reached the alarm saving trapped residents. A state of natural disaster was declared to streamline rescue efforts and recovery operations. Rescue teams and volunteers are constructing sandbag barriers in severely affected towns, including Stronie Śląskie. Helicopters have been deployed to assist in rescue efforts, with some areas relying on Starlink satellite connections for communication. Although the worst of the storm has passed, hydrologists warn that high water levels may persist, posing ongoing risks to infrastructure and homes
