Elsie, one of the two tunnel boring machines used in Vancouver’s Broadway Subway Project marked a significant milestone on April 14, when it reached the Broadway City Hall Station.
The Broadway Subway Project consists of six underground stations on a 5.7 km extension to the existing Millennium line.
Elsie started tunneling west from Great Northern Way-Emily Carr in October and reached Mount Pleasant late in January, from where it continued excavating on March 4.
The TBM has so far excavated more than 1,300 meters of tunnel and installed more than 900 concrete liner rings. It is now expected to stay in Broadway City Hall Station and undergo cutterhead maintenance.
As for the Broadway City Hall Station, it is the project’s deepest station, located 20 meters below ground surface and running underneath the existing Canada Line, while it is also expected to be the extension’s busiest station.
The Broadway Subway Project’s new line is expected to open in 2026.
