Target at West Virginia partially collapsed due to landslide

A Target outlet in Barboursville, West Virginia had to close because a part of the building collapsed due to a landslide, as reported by local news.

Initially thought to be a temporary closure for about 48 hours. However, Barboursville Mayor Chris Tatum stated that the ground behind Target continued to settle, resulting in significant damage to both the area around the building and the store itself. Furthermore, Mayor Tatum expressed that efforts to resolve the issue are underway, but the process hasn't been as fast as desired due to unforeseen circumstances.

The issues at the Target store began on the first day of February when the ground settled, leading to damage that needed repair work on a ruptured water line. Despite reopening the next day, the ground settled again, causing another break in the water line.

On Friday, demolition began on the damaged part of the store, while other businesses in the plaza remained unaffected and considered safe. However, three buildings situated behind the store had received notices for voluntary eviction. In addition, they received offers from Target’s corporation to cover their relocation expenses.

Target’s administration stated that they monitor the situation and that they are in collaboration with local authorities to ensure the site's safety. Moreover, they announced plans to remove the damaged parts of the store while they will take measures to repair and retrofit the structure.
