The Geopier SRT® system allowed a quick response and cost effective repair that required no earthwork.
After a heavy rainstorm that dropped over 8-inches of rain within a few hours, a landslide formed in the slope above Riverside Drive in Memphis, TN on March 10, 2016. The landslide forced lane closure on the north bound lanes with concrete construction barriers temporarily retaining the soil from impacting the road.
The City of Memphis was under a tight timeline to repair the slope. Geopier met with the City engineers and presented the SRT Plate Pile™ technology as a quick, cost-effective solution to repair the failed slope. Within three weeks of receiving the notice to proceed, Geopier and its licensee, Peterson Contractors, Inc., developed the repair design documents and repaired the slope.
Subsurface Conditions: The subsurface conditions beneath the slope consist primarily of loose to medium dense clayey sand fill containing construction rubble, overlying native medium dense to dense sands and stiff clayey silts. The failure plane corresponds generally to the depth of fill, which is approximately 6 feet at the deepest location
Geopier Solution: The Geopier SRT® system utilizes the patented Plate Pile method to rapidly and economically stabilize landslides that occur on sites with difficult access, or sites that require minimal environmental disturbance. The Geopier SRT system is a slope stabilization method that consists of driving steel Plate Pile™ elements through an active slide mass or a potentially unstable soil layer to penetrate underlying stable materials. The piles consist of steel sections to which rectangular plates are welded. Plate Piles are installed in a staggered grid pattern, and mobilize the strength of the soil through arching and transmit slide forces to the underlying stiffer soil. The downslope force on each Plate Pile is resisted by the shear and bending strength of the Plate Pile in combination with the passive resistance of the soil behind the plate.
