Massive sinkhole in Daisetta, Texas, starts growing again, after 15 years of being stable

A large sinkhole in Daisetta, Texas, U.S.A. started growing again on Sunday, April 2, roughly 15 years after it first appeared.

Furthermore, the sinkhole opened up in 2008 as a 20ft. hole, and rapidly grew to approximately 900ft. in width and 260ft. in depth. The sinkhole has now exceeded 1,000ft. in width, after it began growing again on Sunday afternoon. More specifically, it is estimated by Erskin Holcomb, Liberty Country Assistant Fire Marshal, that the sinkhole has grown 150ft. in width, and another 150ft. in depth.

Mr. Holcomb also reported that two metal tanks were seen falling into the sinkhole, which have been confirmed to be empty. However, a few more plastic tanks, which are believed to contain sodium silicate, are present on a property bordering the sinkhole and the proprietor is reportedly working on a course of action with an environmental company.

It is worth mentioning that the original sinkhole in 2008 had swallowed cars, telephone poles and oil containers, among other items.

As for the reasons behind the sinkhole’s appearance, Daisetta is located over a salt dome, which is believed to be eroded by groundwater.
