A M 7,1 earthquake struck the area close to Peru and Brazil border on Friday, 24 of August, according to U.S. Geological Survey.
The temblor was provoked by a normal faulting at a depth of 609 km. It occurred within the oceanic lithosphere of the subducted Nazca plate, approximately 1,000 km east of the Peru-Chile Trench. The Nazca plate subducts at a rate of about 69mm/year under the South America plate. The epicenter of the shock is located 135 km west of the Peruvian village of Inapari, and 226 kilometers west of the Bolivian city of Cobija.
Due to tectonic activities, the area of Peru is vulnerable to such incidents. Another Mw 7,1 earthquake hit Peru's southern coast in January resulting in one fatality and at least 74 were killed during the massive Mw 8.1 seismic event in 2001 which also triggered a tsunami.
According to Jorge Chavez, head of Civil Defense, the temblor was felt in the area of southeastern Peru but fortunately, due to its depth, the damage was minor. Authorities stated that there was no tsunami risk.
