London’s Landmark Heat Network: Transforming Waste Heat into Sustainable Power

In an ambitious step toward sustainability, London is set to establish the UK's largest heat network, utilizing waste heat sources from the River Thames, the London Underground, and local sewer systems. The project aims to supply around 1,000 buildings in Westminster, including iconic structures like the Houses of Parliament and the National Gallery, with low-carbon heat, marking a significant milestone in the UK's energy transition.

The South Westminster Area Network (SWAN) is a transformative project that will capture waste heat from urban infrastructure and channel it into buildings across central London. By repurposing heat from natural and man-made sources, SWAN can save up to 75,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually — equivalent to the environmental impact of planting 1.2 million trees. This innovative approach not only cuts carbon emissions but also exemplifies a sustainable, circular economy by using locally sourced energy.

Expected to start operations in 2026, SWAN’s heat network will eventually interconnect multiple clusters, providing efficient and clean energy throughout London.
