A landslide took place in Westchester County, New York, early on Saturday, October 21st, and caused disruptions to Metro-North and Amtrack rail services over the weekend, blocking four nearby tracks.
Furthermore, the landslide was first reported at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, during a period of heavy rain in Briarcliff Manor.
It can be deducted from the footage that has circulated so far that a rock retaining wall gave way and resulted in the debris blocking the rail track.
Crews spent the weekend clearing the tracks, so that they could be brought back to service in time for the work week.
So far, two of the four tracks have been cleared from debris, while it has been stated that the crews removed 350 cubic yards of soil and 250 cubic yards of rocks and cement.
The governor’s office explained that the crews are also working on breaking the remnant of the retaining wall, reincorporating segments to stabilize the remaining slope. They also stated how other segments are used as rip-rap, stabilizing the coastline along the rail.
Amtrak released a statement, explaining how its service in the area is mostly restored between Albany and New York City, while Metro-North went on to adjust some of its services.
Finally, work is expected to last a few more days, as the remaining two tracks have to be cleared from debris, and a 140-feet rail segment along the line.
