Geothermal Energy Could Power the U.S. for Millennia—Here’s How

For decades, geothermal energy has remained a largely untapped resource in the United States, limited to areas where the Earth's heat naturally rises close to the surface. However, with advancements in drilling technology, geothermal power is on the verge of a major breakthrough. The U.S. government has recognized its potential, investing $74 million in pilot projects to scale up its use. Experts estimate that by 2050, geothermal energy could supply 10% of the country’s electricity needs, offering a stable and renewable alternative to fossil fuels.

New drilling methods, including enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), use techniques similar to fracking to inject fluid into deep rock formations, creating artificial reservoirs of heated water. This water is then extracted to generate electricity. With these methods, geothermal energy is no longer confined to hot springs or volcanic regions—it can be accessed anywhere in the country. The development of superhot rock energy, where temperatures exceed 400°C at deep drilling sites, has the potential to provide energy far beyond national demand. In fact, just 1% of the world’s superhot rock potential could meet global electricity needs multiple times over.

While geothermal currently accounts for less than 1% of U.S. energy production, its potential is massive. Research sites like Utah’s Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) are leading the charge, experimenting with deep drilling techniques to harness this vast power source. Major tech companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are already integrating geothermal into their energy plans. With continued investment and innovation, geothermal energy could become a cornerstone of America’s clean energy future, providing an unlimited source of carbon-free electricity.
