Geotechnical Surveys Lay the Groundwork for Jammerland Bugt Offshore Wind Development

Offshore wind development at Denmark’s Jammerland Bugt site has entered a pivotal phase, as geotechnical surveys are now underway to support the final design of a 240 MW wind farm. Situated between Kerteminde on Funen and Kalundborg on Zealand, the project involves the installation of 16 turbines, each standing 256 meters tall and rated at 15 MW capacity. These investigations follow months of geophysical surveys that provided a broad understanding of the seabed’s shape and composition.

The ongoing geotechnical work involves sampling the seabed via boreholes at the designated turbine locations and along the planned cable routes. Unlike remote sensing methods, these boreholes offer direct data on subsurface conditions. This includes detailed information on soil stratigraphy, strength parameters, and layering critical to foundation selection and cable burial design. Ensuring the mechanical suitability of the seabed is essential before proceeding to the next stage of development.

In parallel, planning continues for additional marine and land-based surveys focused on export cable routing. These efforts aim to define the installation strategy for connecting offshore turbines to the onshore grid. The investigations are scheduled to run through September and are intended to support safe and efficient transmission design.

The data from these surveys will directly inform foundation engineering, helping define load-bearing capacity, scour protection requirements, and settlement behavior under cyclic loading. Furthermore, accurate assessment of cable corridors is intended to minimize environmental disturbance while maintaining alignment with technical and safety requirements.

Once the current surveys conclude in July, equipment and personnel will relocate to the Lillebælt Syd site, where a second offshore wind farm is scheduled to follow a similar process. Both sites are expected to be operational by 2029, expected to contribute to Denmark’s renewable energy targets
