More than 141 people have been killed in Kinshasa of Democratic Republic of Congo, after the heavy rains of December 13th. President Félix Tshisekedi declared three days of national mourning on December 14th.
Located in Congo River, with more than 15 million people, Kinshasa is facing poorly regulated rapid urbanization. As a result, many houses are in informal settlements or on slopes prone to landslides.
Entire neighborhoods were flooded with muddy water, and major infrastructure and key roads ripped apart by sinkholes, including the N1 highway that links Kinshasa to the chief sea port of Matadi.
According to an official document seen by The New York Times, nearly 40,000 households were flooded and 280 collapsed.
