Finalist: China Water Resources Beifang Investigation, Design and Research Co. Ltd.
Location: Tibet, China
Located in the high-altitude alpine region of Tibet, this hydro-complex for a water conservancy initiative is focused on irrigation and power generation, improving urban and rural water supply and the regional water ecological environment. Knowing the importance of subsurface findings, the survey and design team faced challenging terrain and extreme environmental conditions, that traditional survey methods could not accommodate. They explored digital data acquisition and 3D modeling of geological data but found that many software products lacked integration and the ability to maximize data potential.
They selected Bentley’s open, vendor-neutral ecosystem to produce solutions that would digitalize the production process. Using ContextCapture to process data for geological visibility and ProjectWise for multidiscipline collaboration, new reusability of data for smart engineering evolved. The solution saved CNY 400,000 in survey costs and over 50% in survey time, improving data accuracy by over 10% and work efficiency by over 15%. Establishing a digital twin enhanced project management by 10% and sets an industry benchmark.

Finalist: Research Center of Construction - Gersevanov Research Institute of Bases and Underground Structures (NIIOSP)
Location: Moscow, Russia
Built in the 1950s, the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium has recently undergone its third and largest reconstruction to become an elite category football stadium designed for use year-round. The project required reconstruction of the six-level, elliptically shaped structure while preserving the heritage façade and stadium roofing. Before beginning construction works, the team needed to address several geotechnical issues, including over-consolidated, Jurassic clay deposits, soil compaction, and existing utilities under the foundation slab.
They selected PLAXIS to model and simulate the impact of reconstruction activities, determining the optimal construction sequence in terms of soil deformation, stress, and stability. Using the 3D model increased reliability of the geotechnical forecast of the base displacements for the new construction and reconstruction of existing buildings and structures, providing opportunities to improve operational efficiencies in the final design. Bentley’s digital solution enabled more accurate predictions, improved construction reliability, and reduced the cost of the foundation through detailed soil analysis.

Finalist: Royal HaskoningDHV
Location: Netherlands
With expertise in geotechnical design and engineering, Royal HaskoningDHV was an early adopter utilizing automated and digitalized ground data management and 3D models for advanced interpretation. Previously, soft soil tests were done manually with PDFs and 2D models, which was time-consuming and error-prone, and limited the value of data for geotechnical engineers. They needed a collaborative technology platform to collect, integrate, and reuse data, as well as facilitate reliable digital workflows.
They selected OpenGround as the foundation for geotechnical information management. OpenGround’s accessible single source of truth supports Royal HaskoningDHV’s accurate soil data and enabled a process-based, collaborative approach. Having access to more accurate data in a 3D visual environment provided holistic context, improving understanding of subsurface conditions for data-driven decisions. The collaborative digital solution reduced time on small projects by 10% and by up to 40% on larger projects, with enormous potential to maximize the value of data and connect with other design platforms for future sustainable designs.
