The Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement is a transportation megaproject in the City of Seattle, Washington. The project consists of replacing an overcrowded and unsightly elevated highway along Seattle's waterfront with an underground tunnel. The 57-foot diameter tunneling machine, termed Bertha, is scheduled to resume tunneling operations on December 23, 2015, after approximately two years of repair operations.
Bertha tunneling operations were halted on December 6, 2013 due to overheating. The machine is currently approximately 120 feet below existing grade. Bertha could not be retrieved from the tunnel, so repair operations were completed in place. A 120-foot diameter pit was excavated and pumped dry to expose the tunneling machine head. Pit backfill operations were completed on December 14, 2015. A diagram of the backfill and resultant tunneling operations can be viewed from the Washington State Department of Transportation website.
