ASCE Geo-Institute Hero (2005); ASCE Terzaghi Lecturer (2008); President of the International Geosynthetics Society (1986–1990); Chevalier of the Legion of Honor (2010); Member of the National Academy of Engineering (elected 2009 for pioneering research in geosynthetics engineering and its practical application in civil and geotechnical engineering). JP Giroud now has a second legacy site at Geoengineer.org!
In January 2024, Geoengineer.org proposed to JP Giroud the creation of a JP Giroud Legacy site. We then learned that discussions were already underway for a legacy site under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics Society. When it became clear that the two sites would differ in scope, their development proceeded independently.
With the approval of JP Giroud, we chose an educational focus for the site, aiming to capture the many facets of his imprint on geotechnical and geosynthetics engineering. JP Giroud generously shared materials, which were organized in several complementary ways so that visitors could navigate the site according to their interests. Numerous colleagues of JP Giroud also graciously contributed reflections on his work and personal reminiscences, enriching the portrait of a scientist whose influence continues to shape the field.
Visit the site to glimpse the working habits of an engineering legend (Technical Portrait); to hear colleagues speak about his many roles (Researcher, Educator, Leader, Communicator); to listen to the voice of JP Giroud himself (Anecdotes, Quotes); to watch his honor lectures (for example, the 5th De Mello Lecture, the curator’s favorite); to get pointers for some of his best papers (Educator, Communicator); to find publications previously unavailable in electronic format (Publications, Geosythetics); and even to read verses in French, translated into English (Unpublished Documents, Literary).
And visit again in the future. As JP Giroud remains an active researcher and lecturer, the site will continue to be updated.
