A landslide, triggered by an earthquake, has caused the death of locals and tourists in the Indonesian island of Lombok.

The 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck at about 2:07 pm local time on March, 17, 2019. Approximately 40 tourists were trapped in debris at Tiu Kelep waterfall in Senaru Village, north of Lombok.

"There were about 40 tourists affected by the landslide around the area. Most of the victims were Malaysians and domestic tourists," a North Lombok regency administration spokesman stated.

Rescue teams, which included medical stuff and 4 ambulances, rushed at the scene in search of survivors. According to recent updates, 19 people have been pulled out of the rubble but unfortunately 2 were found dead.

Datin Tai Siew Kim, a Malaysian who was executive editor-in-chief of the Sin Chew Daily newspaper was one of the victims. Her husband was also editor-in-chief of China Press newspaper in Malaysia. "The Foreign Ministry has received reports that a Malaysian has died, while six more are missing after a 5.8 Richter scale earthquake struck East Lombok, Indonesia today at 2.07 pm. The Ministry would like to express its condolences to the victims and their families affected," China Press reported. Kim's son was also present at the site but, fortunately, he was slightly injured.

The island of Lombok has suffered critical damage caused by earthquakes several times. During the summer of 2018, it was hit by a series of strong earthquakes. In the Bayan district, more than 500 people were killed during this period. On August 5, a Mw 6,9 hit the region causing numerous fatalities, injuries, structural failures and landslides.
