A bridge used by the U.S. Norfolk Southern Railway collapsed into Missouri's Grand River.
Norfolk Southern Railway is a Class I freight railroad stretching for more than 35,000 kilometers in 22 states.
Railway service has been paused between Moberly and Kansas City since the Brunswick bridge gave way on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
The structure was carried away by a debris flow that was caused after a series of high floods. In particular, a day before the incident, the water level in the Grand River near Brunswick reached more than 7.7 meters when the flood stage level is almost 2 meters lower.
There were no casualties associated with the bridge's failure. Brunswick officials have prohibited access to the river and roadblocks have been formed to protect the local population.
The bridge was completely destroyed and, thus, repair works will take a significant amount of time. "There was significant damage to the bridge and current estimates are three to four weeks for repairs," Norfolk Southern Railway officials stated. Extreme flooding makes the re-construction works even more challenging.
According to recent updates, Norfolk Southern Railway has come to agreements with interline partners to use alternative routes until the repairs works are finished.
The bridge failure was anticipated as a series of floods struck the structure and a logjam stuck underneath it the precedent days. Officials decided to cut the rails in the bridge so they can control the failure. "Later on in the evening, they (service crews) thought they were going to lose the bridge. They went ahead and cut some of the rail on each side of the Chariton and Carroll County side, so if it did go out, it would kind of control where it broke," Brent Dickerson, Emergency Management Director for the City of Brunswick, stated.
