An open-pit coal mine collapsed in Alxa League in Inner Mongolia, China, on Wednesday the 22nd of February.
A 180-meter-tall slope failure caused the mine to be buried under a very large volume of debris, which led to at least 6 people getting killed and 47 more going missing.
A search and rescue mission was launched, which involved more than 900 rescue workers and, despite being disrupted by a following landslide, retrieved at least six more survivors as of February 23.
It is worth mentioning that last year China implemented a ban on the construction of new coal mines with output of less than 1.2 million tons a year in the region, while the collapsed one had an output capacity of 900,000 tons annually.
In addition to that, a goal has been set to reduce fatalities from all mining activity by 10% until 2025 and 5000 small output mines have been shut down since 2016.
Following the incident, immediate safety inspections have been ordered at other mines by the authorities.
