Landslides caused widespread destruction in Indonesia over the weekend, hitting villages on the Sulawesi island, and claiming the lives of at least 18 people.
Officials announced on Monday, April 15, that a search and rescue operation is currently ongoing, with two people missing, while another two were successfully pulled out of the rubble during the operation.
Sulaiman Malia, chief of the Tana Toraja district Disaster Management Agency, stated that fog and drizzle in the area hampered rescue efforts, and participating officers were overwhelmed by the rough weather conditions.
In addition to this, roads got damaged in the event and made vehicle movements difficult.
According to Malia, the area had experienced continuous, heavy, rain prior to the landslides, especially over the past week.
Finally, last month flash floods and landslides caused widespread destruction on Indonesia’s Sumatra island.
