According to the Geoscience Workforce Report, published in May 2014, by America's Geosciences Institute, geo-science employment positions appear to be more than the actual candidates, graduating from relevant degree programs. Based on the Institute's data, by the end of the decade, there will be a shortage of about 135,000 geoscientists, despite the increasing number of enrolled and graduating students.
The imminent shortage of geoscientists is been recognized by the industry and employers also emphasize on the need for highly skilled candidates who will fill the vacancies that will appear in the following decades. They also express their concern about the ability of the newly graduating geoscientists to follow a career in the specific sector, despite their participation in field camp experiences - being involved in identifying areas rich in natural resources or susceptible to various hazards - and their exposure to math courses up to a calculus-II level.
Opposite to the private sector, human resources are continuously diminishing in most federal agencies, according to Carolyn Wilson, author of the Geoscience Workforce Report. Based on her data, there are significantly fewer young geologists in the age distribution profile of federal agencies, with the only exception of meteorologists, where the image is reversed.
