On Monday, October 17th, a large 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred near Papua New Guinea.
The quake originated near New Britain Island, just north of Papua New Guinea according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Luckily, no tsunami warnings were needed and the quake caused no reported injuries and little damage.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was only 21 miles (35 km) below the surface; relatively shallow. This explains why the quake was felt as far away as the south coast of Papua New Guinea, over 460 miles (750 km) away. Quakes of this size are of great concern in the South Pacific area due to their potential to cause tsunamis. In 1998, two earthquakes in this area measuring 7.0 caused tsunamis resulting in over 2100 deaths near the north coast of Papua New Guinea.
Papua New Guinea is on what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonically active area known for its high frequency of volcanic and seismic activity.
