Bypass tunnel confronts the leaks of the Delaware Aqueduct (video)

Over the past years the New York City Department of Environmental Protection has detected leaks in a section of the Delaware Aqueduct. According to investigations, the cracking observed in the limestone which is more prone to disolution than sandstone, shale, gneiss and granite, rocks mostly present in the part of the tunnel.

DEP will construct a 3-mile bypass tunnel under the Hudson River in order to mitigate the leakage, The tunnel will connect the Town of Newburgh in Orange County with the Town of Wappinger in Dutchess County. In sections away from the tunnel the cracks will be sealed using grout. The construction of the first 900-foot-deep and 30-foot-diameter shaft in the Town of Newburgh began last Thursday using explosives. The second 700-foot shaft is expected to start next month in the Town of Wappinger and both shafts are scheduled to be completed by 2016.
