A study has shown that 20-30 people are killed in abandoned mines and quarries. These individuals typically are just uninvited guests and not professionals. The leading cause of death is by drowning, and the second most common cause of death is by individuals that decide to visit quarries with ATVs. Falls and asphyxiation are also common. More information is available in the links below, but the bottom line is: An abandoned quarry and mine is not a safe place to visit!
The Mine Safety and Health Administration has produced a number of documents, videos and resources to spread the word about the dangers associated with quarries and mines and try to keep guests away.
