Very sad indeed. I started to interact quite closely with Dick in 1993 when he took the lead of the National Geotechnical Experiment Sites Board. I attach an old photo from 1993 when Professor Woods Board came to visit the Texas A&M University site. The NGES was a project led by NSF (Mehmet Tumay) and FHWA (AL DiMiilio). I believe that Dick was chosen to lead that illustrious group for our country because of his geotechnical knowledge of course but also because of his kind demeanor, his solution oriented discussions, and his open mindedness to other opinions. Dick is on the right and I am sure you will recognize others in the group albeit a bit younger looking.
